Chapter 6

We have just witnessed the worship of chapter 5. We saw how the Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, received the scroll from God the Father, and how millions of angels and the Church broke out in praise and worship of Jesus Christ.

We saw the Church depicted as being in Heaven before the tribulation period begins. Now we will see why the Church is in Heaven, because all of the wrath of God will be poured out on an unbelieving world.

Chapter 6 will reveal the unveiling of the antichrist. This happens after the rapture of the Church, at the opening of the first seal. Remember, what the Church was promised.

I will keep thee from the hour, as Jesus promised in Revelation 3:10.

Then we will see the Lamb continuing to open the scroll and reveal the next three horsemen which are unveiled in seals two, three and four. One fourth of the world’s population will be killed in this chapter alone, and by the time we are through with the tribulation, one half of the world’s population will have been killed.

Now as a side note, this outpouring of wrath is exactly why I do not believe that the Church is still on the earth at this time. The wrath of God will not discriminate in who is killed, except for those found in Revelation 7:4, i.e., the 144,000 from the twelve tribes of Israel. So it stands to reason that the Church cannot be on the earth or they would also suffer the wrath of God.

We will see that the four living creatures are used during the breaking of the first four seals.

We will see that people are running for their very lives. They are hiding in the mountains and caves and wanting to be killed rather that face the judgment that is starting. We will also see that the people of the earth know the One that is dispensing this judgment. We see the sky darkened and split apart as if rolling up a scroll. The wrath of God is dispensed by the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is now time to pay the piper for all the sin that man has devised.

I believe a brief outline is in order for chapter six as we see the first six seals opened in the scroll by the Lord Jesus Christ.

The First Seal 6:1,2 Rider on a White Horse
The Second Seal 6:3,4 Rider on a Red horse
The Third Seal 6:5,6 Rider on a Black Horse
The Fourth Seal 6:7,8 Rider on a Pale horse
The Fifth Seal 6:9-11 Prayer of the Martyred Remnant
The Sixth Seal 6:12-17 The Day of Wrath has come and the the Last Half of the Great Tribulation

The Church of Jesus Christ is now in Heaven. We talked about this last week. We saw the evidence demands that only the twenty four elders are singing the song of redemption. We believe this because angels do not sing, and angels have never been redeemed. The angels in heaven at this time have never sinned and have no need of redemption.

We saw that praise broke out because the Lamb of God now has the seven sealed scroll in His possession and is ready to open the seals.

Now the wrath of the Lamb begins, and we see the unveiling of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Revelation 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, come and see.

Revelation 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Jesus Christ now cracks the first seal, and He unrolls the scroll far enough to reveal what is written within the length of the first writing, between the first and second seal.

Now I believe that what we see here in chapter six is the beginning of the period called the tribulation. I use the term tribulation in contrast with what we have here on earth today which is tribulation that believers and nonbelievers alike experience in the world.

The people of God, Christians in particular, have been suffering tribulation, testing or refining, every since Jesus walked the planet. This tribulation will be unlike anything ever experienced on this earth.

Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Matthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

First let us take a little side trip. Once again we have a little discrepancy with versions of the Bible. Look at this same passage in the New American Standard Bible (NASB).

Revelation 6:16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;

Revelation 6:17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

Remembering the rule of the plain sense making good sense, I ask myself why the translator used the word their instead of the word his which makes this plural instead of singular.

We have seen that all of the judgment has been turned over to Jesus Christ. He it is that will dispense judgment upon the earth and the people that are living here.

Now if this sounds a little picky, the object lesson here is that altering one word can open up a large can of worms called “Satan”. Let me explain. Some Bible scholars and students think that Satan will be pouring out his wrath, and then Jesus will pour out His wrath, so that judgment comes from the Lamb and from the Devil. The word their in the NASB is one of the passages that are used to prove that some judgment comes from other sources.

Who owns the scroll?

Who is in charge of opening the scroll?

Who is in charge of sending or allowing the entire wrath of the Lamb to be delivered upon an unbelieving world?

Answer, Jesus Christ. So I believe that the word him should be left in the text and not changed. Him makes good sense, their can cause confusion.

Look at Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

God was in charge in eternity past. The forces of evil can only do or accomplish what the Lord tells them to do or allows them to do.

And God is still in charge. God the Father is still on the Throne, Jesus Christ is still at His right hand and prayer changes things!

Several verses tell me that Christ is in charge of the tribulation from the start to the finish and will be in charge throughout the Millennial period. The tribulation is the wrath of God as dispensed by His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who has been given all authority.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. The word power can be translated “authority”:

G1849

exousia

ex-oo-see’-ah

From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery(concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: – authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

How much is “all” authority?

Jesus Christ has authority to offer redemption, forgiveness, grace, peace, love, to open the seven sealed scroll, and to execute judgment. All authority belongs to Jesus Christ, because He alone is worthy! Since Revelation chapter 6 is the beginning of the tribulation period, let us turn to Revelation 10:7 and read this passage to verify who is in charge and who is dispensing judgment!

Revelation 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. Whose mystery will be finished? God’s mystery!

The bowls of wrath which are contained in the seventh trumpet will be poured out.

Revelation 16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Revelation 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. Whose wrath is being poured out? God’s wrath!

The Bible calls Jesus Christ the author and finisher of our faith.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Revelation 6:1b and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

The first living creature speaks with the sound of thunder and tells John to Come and see. What does John see? He sees a white horse, which in John’s day was the machine of war. Horses had no fear and would charge into battle directed only by the rider on their back. The color white usually depicted the victorious general riding back into town as a conqueror, having defeated the enemy.

But notice this rider. He is sitting on the horse, but the Bible does not say that the rider is dressed in white only the horse is white. This rider has a bow but we see no arrows. We see that he has had a crown given to him and that he went forth conquering and to conquer. The crown he has is a Stephanos crown. It is like a wreath or prize that was given to winning athletes in public games.

Some think that this rider is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, but I think we should take a closer look.

First who is opening the scroll? Jesus Christ.

What kind of a crown does Jesus Christ wear?

Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Revelation 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. The Greek word for crowns is:

G1238

diadema

dee-ad’-ay-mah

From a compound of G1223 and G1210; a “diadem” (as bound about the head): – crown. Compare G4735.

This diadem is a King’s crown and Jesus Christ wears many!

What kind of crown does this rider wear? He wears a Stephanos crown which we have already identified as a wreath or type of twining.

What weapon do we normally see Jesus as wielding? Jesus Christ wields a sharp double edged sword.

Revelation 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

Finally, this rider’s bow has no arrows with it. The meaning is; this rider comes with words and not weapons. He comes to conquer peacefully. He looks good, he has a crown, he appears to be just what the world needs, and he will be accepted as a world leader. I believe that what we have here is the man of sin, the antichrist himself.

The other horsemen bring destruction and this is their leader. This rider cannot be Jesus Christ because Jesus Christ is the one opening the scroll.

I believe what we see here is the little horn of the Old Testament book of Daniel.

Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

This man rises to power during the first three and one half years of the tribulation. He comes slowly rising to power but with great deception.

He is the prince which is to come.

Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

He is the king who blasphemes.

Daniel 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

Daniel 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Daniel 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

Daniel 11:39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

Daniel 11:40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

Daniel 11:41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Daniel 11:42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

Daniel 11:43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

Daniel 11:44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.

Daniel 11:45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

He is the son of perdition who deceives people.

2Thessalonians 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2Thessalonians 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ the better manuscripts read day of the Lordis at hand.

2Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Thessalonians 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

He is the antichrist.

1John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

He is the beast in Revelation.

Revelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Daniel 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Everyone will think this man brings peace and he will, but it is only temporary. This is a false peace and although Israel will have peace for a short period of time, there will soon be no peace for anyone. We saw in Daniel chapter 11 that it will not last.

Jeremiah 6:14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Revelation 6:3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

Revelation 6:4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

The rider of the red horse is given power by the white horse rider. He has no power of his own. Notice that he takes peace from the earth. The first rider brings a false peace to the people of the earth and the second rider takes it away. The color of this horse represents blood and war.

The New King James Version says a fiery red horse. Let us look at this verse in the New King James Version.

Revelation 12:3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold a great fiery red dragon having seven heads and seven horns, and seven diadems on his head.

The thought here is that this is dealing with satanic war and blood shed that takes peace away from the earth.

Some writers believe this is the same person that we saw on the white horse. The thinking is that the antichrist comes bringing world peace. He then rises to power in order to conquer, and then he brings war and blood shed to achieve his goals. The result of world wide war and bloodshed is always famine, starvation, inflation, disease and finally death to one fourth of the world’s population.

This rider will do three things.

  1. He will take peace from the earth.1 Thessalonians 5:2 For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.1Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety! Then sudden destruction comes on them, as travail upon a woman with child. And they shall not escape.
  2. He will cause people to kill one another and this sounds like war.
  3. Military power is placed in the hand of one man.

This is indicated by the great sword of verse four. The Greek words used for great sword indicates a weapon of judicial punishment such as a sword that could lop off a person’s head in one pass. You can see a parallel to this from the Olivet Discourse in the New Testament book of Matthew chapter 24.

Jesus said first would come deception, and then wars and rumors of wars, nation will rise against nation. We can see a correlation in Matthew chapter 24:4-7.

Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Matthew 24:5 For many will come in My name, saying, I am Christ, and will deceive many.

Matthew 24:6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled, for all these things must occur; but the end is not yet.

Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in different places.

This is what we are looking at here in Revelation chapter 6 with the four horsemen. Now whether these horses all have the same rider is a topic for further discussion but the events pictured are fascinating.

The third seal is opened and the third horse appears which is:

Revelation 6:5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

Revelation 6:6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

What do you see here? Famine and starvation! The Denarius equaled one day’s wage. I see that a whole day’s wage will be required just to purchase enough wheat to sustain one person for one day. I see inflation like I have never seen it before. I see that the economy has gone out of control and that food is so very expensive that people are willing to eat the food of animals in order to survive, three measures of barley for a penny.

Barley was what they fed the animals and now the people are eating it because they get three times as much grain for their day’s wage. Some Bible teachers connect this with Revelation chapter 13 and see a system of rationing.

But I see something else, and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

What do you think that the oil and wine represent? They represent luxury and always have. In the time of Diocletian in Italy there was a famine. Diocletian put out an edict to turn the vineyards into wheat fields so that they could feed all the people. Italy was famous for the wine and vineyards that grew there.

Changing the vineyards to wheat fields would seem like a good thing to do, but the people rose up and were going to cause a revolt over the edict. Why? Because, they were not willing to give up their wine. They would rather starve than give it up. They would not change the usage of their fields. The oil is used in perfumes and all manner of luxury and they were not willing to give any of it up.

We saw this in the 1920’s and 1930’s when there was rationing here in the USA. There was plenty of wine to drink. The bootleggers made a real profit during prohibition because people are not willing to give up what they consider to be luxuries.

Revelation 6:7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

Revelation 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Let us look at the Old Testament books of Leviticus chapter 26 and Ezekiel chapter 14. We will see if the same four judgments announced there are as we see in Revelation 6:8, first the sword, second hunger, third death, and fourth the beasts of the earth.

Leviticus 26:14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;

Leviticus 26:15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:

Leviticus 26:16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

Leviticus 26:17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

Leviticus 26:18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

Leviticus 26:19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

Leviticus 26:20 And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

Leviticus 26:21 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.

Leviticus 26:22 I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate.

Leviticus 26:23 And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;

Leviticus 26:24 Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.

Leviticus 26:25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

Ezekiel 14:13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

Ezekiel 14:14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

Ezekiel 14:15 If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:

Ezekiel 14:16 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.

Ezekiel 14:17 Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:

Ezekiel 14:18 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.

Ezekiel 14:19 Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:

Ezekiel 14:20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

Ezekiel 14:21 For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

The Census Bureau believes that there will be over nine billion people on this earth by the year 2050. If one fourth are killed by the appearance of the fourth horseman that would be approximately 2.3 billion people killed before the end of Revelation chapter six.

Remember, I take this passage literally because it has a very clear message. I do not have to use any homiletic gymnastics to see the plain and obvious intent of the writer and the plain and obvious meaning of the passage.

Jesus Christ is allowing Satan to unleash the antichrist on this world, and everyone will suffer. Therefore, I do not believe that Jesus Christ would allow His Church to be here on this earth during the famine and the pestilence and the wild beasts and the sword that will kill 2.3 BILLION people. The Church has already been tested and purged and purified by the precious blood of the Lamb.

What should our reaction be to this coming holocaust? We should be spreading the gospel to everyone that we can possibly reach. It’s called evangelism, reaching out to others with the good news that they can escape the coming night of the wrath of the Lamb. We should be telling them that Jesus saves, and He saves to the uttermost.

Now, if you have read this far, you must have at the very least an interest in coming events. Let me ask you a few questions.

Do you know for sure that if you died this very moment that you would spend eternity with Jesus Christ in Heaven?

If you were to die today and stand before a righteous God and He asked you “Why should I let you into My Heaven?”, what would your answer be to Him?

You can know for sure, and you can have the answer to the “Why should I let you into My Heaven?” question.

The Bible tells us that our good works are as filthy rags.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

We cannot do enough good works to find favor with God, because then we could boast (brag) about how we were able to please God all by ourselves.

Do you believe that you are a sinner? The Bible says that you and I are sinners!

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

The depth of our sin does not matter. A little sin is the same as a big sin, because it separated us from a Holy God.

Getting upset with someone and lashing out at them, telling stories about someone else, gossip, lying, cheating, stealing, even in some little miniscule way will prevent us from entering Heaven.

But, there is hope because the Bible also provides us a path to follow. This path leads to God and is the only way that He will accept.

We are told in the New Testament book of Romans that God provided a way.

Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This means that Jesus Christ died for you. But how do we accept His death on our behalf?

Continuing in the book of Romans,

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Bible tells us that there is a payment required for sin and that it is death. This death is an eternal separation from God in a place that is called outer darkness, Hell and the Lake of Fire. It is a place of eternal torment where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, pain and suffering forever.

If this sounds like someplace you would want to be, then you do not have to do anything because it is the destiny of all who remain in their sin.

There is hope, the Bible tells us that Christ died for the ungodly and offers us a free gift of eternal life with Him in Heaven. We are told that Jesus Christ died for us, shed His life’s blood for us and took our place on the cross of death.

And here is what we need to do.

We need to agree with God that we have sinned and fallen short of what He wanted.

Then we need to believe in the Person that God sent to pay for our sin.

Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for your sin and mine. God put your sin and my sin on Jesus. Jesus paid the price of redemption by taking that sin to the cross and giving His sinless life and precious blood as payment for our sin.

If you were convicted of a crime and someone stood up and said that he would take your punishment if you would believe in him and allow him to take it, I am sure you would agree right on the spot and say, yes I believe, please take my punishment.

My friend that is exactly what Jesus Christ did on your behalf. He gave His life so that you could live.

The Bible tells us in the book of Romans

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Two things are required. First that you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He paid for your sin on the cross of Calvary and that God raised Him from the dead.

The second is that you open your mouth and heart and “ASK HIM TO SAVE YOU”.

When we ask Him to come into our life, and save us from the wages of sin and believe that He will, He does!

Here is a little prayer that you can say to God asking Jesus to save you. Speak it out loud, shout it if you must, but say it for sure.

Dear Jesus I know that I am a sinner deserving to be separated from you forever. I am sorry for what I have done and ask that You would come into my life and save me. Forgive my sin and give me eternal life with you in Heaven.

If you have prayed this prayer, you are now a child of God and bound for Heaven when you die. If you prayed this prayer please respond to the e-mail on the home page and we will send you a new Birth Certificate and some things, without any charge, that will help you get started with your Christian life.

May God bless and keep you as you start your new life with Him.

Recapping the previous 8 verses we saw:

  1. The white horse, most likely the antichrist himself, coming to bring peace to Israel and that it would be a false peace, coming with words and not weapons.
  2. We saw the red horse and that the rider came and was given power to take peace away from the earth, that he was given a great sword, and because of his efforts, people would be killing one another.
  3. Next we saw a black horse. The rider had a pair of scales that would indicate rationing and food shortages. We also saw inflation had escalated to a very high point so that one days wage was required to purchase enough wheat to make a loaf of bread.
  4. Then we saw the pale horse; his rider was named death and the grave, or Hades, and it followed after him. Power is given to Death and Hades to kill one fourth of the world’s population, approximately 2.3 billion people per the 2050 census projection. This killing would be accomplished by famine, plagues, wars and by wild beasts devouring people.

The four horsemen have ridden into the sunset, so-to-speak, and now the scene changes. No more horses, we now see a different scene depicted as being under the altar.

Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Revelation 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

Revelation 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

This altar is believed to be the altar of burnt offerings where the priests made sacrifices for the atonement for sin.

Who are the souls depicted as being under the altar? They were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held. We see them crying out for justice, that their blood might be avenged on those that dwell on the earth. We see that they are given white robes, which would indicate righteousness, and they are told to wait for a little while until their fellow servants and their brethren were killed.

So who are they? We have touched on this before and some of the thinking is as follows.

They are the saints slain during the first part of the tribulation. And, they will stay under the altar until all of the people that turn to Christ during the tribulation are killed or martyred.

Another view is that this is none other than the Old Testament saints who were martyred for holding fast to the teaching of the prophets and of the books of the law. They were waiting in faith for the promise of the Messiah, and they will remain in Heaven waiting for the second half of the first resurrection so as to receive all of the people that will be killed for the testimony of Jesus. See Question and Answer section for a complete discussion of the resurrections and their order.

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

The grammar of Revelation 6:9 were slain is perfect tense. had been slain suggests that these martyrs are from the past and are waiting for the rest of the saints that were to be killed.

Hebrews 11:13-16 would seem to bear this out by reading the hall of faith. These people died not having seen the promised Messiah but had faith that He would come. Their faith was counted unto them for righteousness.

Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Hebrews 11:14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

Hebrews 11:15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Let us look at the cry of those under the altar in Revelation 6:10

How long, O Lord, holy and true, meaning just and faithful. This is an appeal to God’s righteousness.

That’s like saying how long are you going to let this wickedness continue O Lord before you bring judgment? And continuing in this verse, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth.

We are instructed that vengeance belongs to the Lord and not to us. They are saying how long Lord before you bring your vengeance on the murderers and the idolaters that dwell on the earth.

We see the continuous usage of words that depict judgment is about to fall on all that dwell on the earth. This is further proof that the Church is not on the earth at this time, it is in Heaven. Everyone that received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior during the age of grace, Jew or Gentile is now in Heaven With Christ.

It is also an appeal for God’s vengeance since vengeance belongs to God alone.

Compare this with the following verses:

Jeremiah 11:20 But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.

Jeremiah 15:15 O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.

Deuteronomy 32:35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

Deuteronomy 32:41 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.

Deuteronomy 32:43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

Psalms 58:10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

Psalms 58:11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Psalms 94:1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.

This is not because God hates sinners with some sort of malice and just wants to wipe them out. This is a just and righteous God that has said be ye holy as I am holy.

Leviticus 11:44 For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Leviticus 11:45 For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

1Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

This is the true and living God that sent His Son to pay the price or penalty of sin. Jesus said in the book of Matthew,

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

God, that wants us to love Him (prefer Him) above anything or anyone else. That’s what Luke 14:26 is talking about. We can translate this passage “if anyone comes to me and does not prefer me more than mother or father or son or daughter, then he is not worthy of me”.

Romans 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

We would use the words “chosen and rejected”, or Jacob have I preferred over Esau.

Now I also want us to see the comfort for those under the altar.

Revelation 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them. They are clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ because the righteousness of Christ is their position before God. These saints know where they are, safe in Heaven with the Lord.

They are told to rest yet for a little season. The rest is their reward in Heaven look at the following verse.

Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed is the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

We are promised rest from our labors. These saints are instructed to rest just a little longer, until their fellow servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

There are more people that will be martyred and these saints are to wait patiently for them, and may I say, it will not be a long wait,a little season.

This passage also speaks of the eternal plan of God, look at the words should be fulfilled. God has laid out a plan in His word that we can follow. From Genesis to Revelation there is a perfect plan revealed in the pages of the Bible. Our task is to search it out.

If we go back to Revelation 3:10, which I do a lot, we see that this is in fact a time of testing of those who dwell upon the earth. I believe this time of testing is for all the unbelievers that have been left on earth after the rapture of the Church. They will be tested and some will believe, and because they come to faith, many will be killed.

Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

When a person comes to faith in Christ during the tribulation, they will refuse to take the mark of the beast, and because of their refusal to worship the image, they will be killed, so says the following verse.

Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Now the sixth seal is broken.

Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Revelation 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

At the opening of the sixth seal there is a great earthquake. There are quite a few earthquakes mentioned in the scriptures. We see them in the beginning of sorrows in the books of Matthew, Mark and Luke.

Matthew 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Matthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.,

Mark 13:8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows,

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

We have earthquakes in the book of Revelation.

Rev 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Revelation 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.,

Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

Lastly, compare the above scriptures with the book of Joel in the Old Testament.

Joel 3:12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

Joel 3:13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

Joel 3:15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

Joel 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

Joel 3:17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

This is a great catastrophe involving the sun, the moon, the stars, the sky and the earth. All of the elements are being shaken, people are running for their very lives, fear is everywhere. Something is wrong with the sun, there is no light, the moon looks like blood, the stars are falling from the sky, the mountains are splitting apart and being moved about.

Now we have several views of what is happening here and I will try to give them all to you.

First, there is the symbolical view, to wit, this is just political and social upheaval and that the sun and moon and stars are not having any problems at all. The mountains are not moving out of their place, it is just symbols of the radical changes in the political system and the social system.

Second, there is the literal explanation with three major views. This is the earthquake at the second coming which is the end of the tribulation period mentioned in Revelation 16:18 above, however the details are different than Revelation 6:12-17.

This is the earthquake at the mid point of the tribulation. Look at the following verse.

Revelation 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.,

or

Ezekiel 38:19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;

Ezekiel 38:20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.

Ezekiel 38:21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.

Ezekiel 38:22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.

Ezekeil 38:23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

This appears to be localized and only for the city, Jerusalem specifically.

This is the earthquake at the beginning of the tribulation period.

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand.

These are all major views held by good Bible teachers and professors.

Holding the first or second view you will be looking for signs of the coming of the Lord.

  1. You would look for the temple to be rebuilt.
  2. You would look for the ashes of the red heifer to be discovered.
  3. You would look for the man of sin to be revealed.
  4. You would look for the Jews to discover who among them was of the descendants of Aaron so that they could minister inside the Holy of Holies. The high priest was the only one allowed to go into the Holy of Holies. They had to be of the Aaronic priesthood.
  5. You might also look for the Jews to locate the Ark of the Covenant.

A possible problem with this is that the Ark of the Covenant could be pictured in the temple in Heaven.

Revelation 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. This could present a little problem.

  1. You would look for the Jews to find the exact composition of the incense that would need to be burned on the altar of incense. They cannot offer strange fire, confirmed by the result of Nadab and Abihu’s death for doing just that.

Leviticus 10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

Leviticus 10:2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

  1. If you hold a mid or post tribulation view you are welcome to your view. But I believe that we are not to know the hour of the Lord’s return to catch away the Church. If all of the above things must first take place then it would be possible to determine the hour that the Lord would return.

Look at the sheer panic that has overtaken those that dwell on the earth.

Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

People are actually trying to hide from the Lamb of God possibly forgetting that there is not a place on earth that they can conceal themselves from the omniscience and omnipresence of God.

Isaiah 2:19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Isaiah 2:20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

Isaiah 2:21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Hosea 10:8 The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

Luke 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Luke 23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

Luke 23:31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

It is seen in the fact that they know who is in charge of the wrath.

Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

It is seen in that they doubt their ability to survive.

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

The aorist tense (elthen) equals “has come/already or happened/already” or “taken place”.

Revelation 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

We see here that the people dwelling on the earth know full well that the wrath of the Lamb is being poured out on them, and they refuse to repent, they would rather die than repent.

It is so easy to say, Mark 9:24b Lord I believe, help thou mine unbelief. Have you confessed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? It is easy!

May God bless and keep you as you honor and worship His Son. Amen
