Chapter 22

We come now to the final chapter of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus has revealed Himself in all of His majesty, Glory and beauty. We have seen the destruction of the forces of evil; Satan has been cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity and, Jesus now reigns supreme. Once again we are told that the message of the book has been delivered by an angel to His servants to show them things that must shortly come to pass. John is told not to seal this book because Jesus is coming “Quickly” and “we“should be helping others to understand what is coming.

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

John is still listing to and observing the things that one of the seven angels is saying and showing him. Verse one revels the pure river of life, clear as crystal flowing out of the throne of God and the Lamb. I understand that this is a literal river but that it also has a spiritual meaning, or a symbolic aspect if you will.

This river of water is the source of all life, because there will not be any creature in this city that has not drunk deeply from this river. Symbolically this is the life that flows out from God and Christ and it will be a constant reminder to us that Jesus Christ is the living water that gives us life.

He it is that quenches our thirst for life.

He it is that satisfies our thirst for life.

He it is that fulfills our thirst for life

and He it is that completes our thirst for life.

The following scriptures should reinforce this in our minds and hearts.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:2a In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life.

Have we seen this tree of life before? Yes we have in the Old Testament book of Genesis.

Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Keep in mind that God did not allow Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of life because of their sin lest they would live forever in a fallen state.

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

At the first God gave every tree for food except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and since they had not eaten of the tree of life yet God expelled them from the garden before they could.

Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Now, in the New Jerusalem everyone may eat of the Tree of Life freely. There are no longer any restrictions because everyone there is without sin. Sin has been vanquished and there is no longer any sorrow. Your loved ones are there if they were believers, mom, dad, the children and all friends that were trusting in Christ. Everyone in the city will have put on the wedding garments and will have been wed to Jesus Christ. This is the message for all unbelievers that we must convey to them, without Christ in their lives they will be eternally lost.

Do I believe that these are real trees? Yes I do because the fruit can be eaten by the inhabitants of the city, there are no restrictions. Everyone and all nations that have drunk from the tree of life (translate this as having received Jesus Christ into their lives) have been healed from all sin and all sickness. Jesus Christ has restored all to health.

Revelation22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

The curse that has been lifted is found in Genesis chapter three.

Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Genesis 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Can you imagine that all of the sweat and pain of life will be removed. The earth will spring forth with untainted growth and it will be beautiful again as it was in the Garden of Eden. We were created to please God and to walk in the garden with Him in sweet communion and once again that will be possible.

Revelation 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

We will serve God with Joy and thanksgiving because we will see Him face to face. What a blessing that will be because now in our time 2009 we know Him by faith and not by sight. Jesus Christ is going to put sight to our faith just as He promised in The Bible.

If you are sick now, don’t worry because you will not be sick in the new city, you will not be lame in any of your joints, you will not be concerned about your health or your looks because Jesus has prepared a new body for all of us and it will be –(let’s see, what’s the word Oh yes,) PERFECT.

Revelation 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

This is a perfect Place with a perfect climate given to us by the perfect God, it will be awesome to behold. Now check this out for the verse says that “they shall reign for ever and ever”. What do you think that this means? There have been several interpretations given on this topic all the way from the plausible to the ridiculous but all that I am willing to say is that we will enjoy the job whatever it is.

Revelation 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.

Revelation 22:7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Throughout the entire bible God has been faithful and true. God has never broken a promise; He has never spoken a lie or attempted to trick anyone. God is faithful and we can trust Him with our life. God is just and will reward faithfulness and in like manner He will bless the faithful.

God sent His angel to give us this message through the last of the prophets, the apostle John. This message is our call to be ready. This message is our call to reach the lost with the message of salvation that Jesus Christ has paid for our sins. It is finished and the only thing yet to be completed is for you to receive Him as your savior.

Verse 27 tells us that when these things in the book of the Revelation come to pass they will unfold very fast and in just 7 years everything will transpire that is written in the book.

Revelation 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

Revelation 22:9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

Wow, John is so filled with the awesomeness of what he perceives that he looses sight of one very important fact, only God is to be worshiped! The angel gives John the instant reminder that he is to worship God and God only. This reminds me of the Apostle Paul when the people were going to worship and sacrifice to him and Barnabas.

Act 14:11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

Act 14:12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

Act 14:13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

Act 14:14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

Act 14:15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

Act 14:16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Act 14:17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

Act 14:18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.

Paul put a stop to this instantly. Now I do not put any blame on John for his temporary amnesia because we would surely have done the same thing. Can you feel the panic in Paul and Barabbas’s voices? They had to put a stop to the people sacrificing to them and they did. Likewise the angel sets John straight and reminds him that he is a little carried away with what he has seen.

Rev 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Unlike Daniel who was told to seal up the vision John is told that this prophesy , the book of Revelation, is for his generation,(the time is at hand). And we are blessed that John wrote it down so that all coming after him would be blessed and instructed. (ref Daniel chapter 12 verses 4-7)

Dan 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Dan 12:5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. Dan 12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? Dan 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

You may want to read the vision of Daniel as it does coincide with the book of Revelation.

Rev 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

Does this give you pause to think about the context of this verse? It did for me, I had to ponder this one for quite a time because at first glance it sounded like license to sin but, that is not what is being said at all. Dr Gill has said it better than I could so ill let you read his thoughts.

“so the meaning of this expression is, he that is now found without a righteousness, and full of all unrighteousness, and acts unrighteously, will continue so; there will be no change made in him, no regeneration, renovation, repentance, or reformation; he will remain the same wicked man he ever was; or he that hurts, or does injury to his fellow creatures, will still do mischief; at least he will have the same inclination, though not the opportunity and power, but will attempt it, of which there will be an instance in the wicked dead, when raised; see Rev_20:8.

And he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: or he shall be filthy still: all mankind are originally, naturally, and universally filthy, or defiled with sin. Some are cleansed from it by the blood of Christ, others are not; and these will continue polluted, nor will the fire of hell fetch out the filthiness of their hearts and nature: or the words may be rendered, “he that defileth, let him defile still”; though he will not be able to defile the temple of God, or corrupt the good communications of the saints, yet he will continue to defile himself; the same evil thoughts, &c. will proceed out of him as ever, which defile the man.”

Does this mean the filthy and the unrighteous, the liars and the cheats will still be in their sin while they are in the lake of fire? It does!

Revelation 22:11b “and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still”

The righteous and the holy have received Jesus Christ into their hearts and the righteousness and holiness that Jesus imparts to us will be with us and in us throughout eternity and we will be dwelling with Christ. We need a big Amen here, hallelujah Praise God for His grace and mercy.

Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Once again we see the words “behold I come quickly” remember this does not mean that we look for this to happen today but, that when it does happen it will come in rapid succession. The events will unfold quickly, one after the other. Keep in mind the entire event of the tribulation will happen in a short seven (7) year time frame. Jesus Christ Himself, sitting on the great throne will dispense justice and it will be eternal glory for the righteous and eternal damnation for the wicked, and may I say that I find no joy in knowing that there will be a vast number of people that have chosen to spend their eternity in the torment of the lake of fire. Please pray for your friends and neighbors that are unsaved so that they may by the grace of God avoid this coming judgment .

Revelation 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Remember, this revelation is about Jesus Christ, He sent His angel to testify to the apostle John. I do not believe that it could be any clearer than this unless we combine this verse with Revelation 1:8,11.

Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty

Revelation 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last:

I believe this says it all, Jesus in the eternal God, the great I AM. There is no other.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

There will not be one unbeliever in the New Jerusalem! Therefore all who enter will have access to the tree of life. That should thrill your hearts.

What do you think is meant by the words “do His Commandments?

What commandments?

Do you remember what Jesus said was the first and greatest commandment?

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

I believe that this passage in Mark will do just perfectly! Heaven, the abode of Christ and all believers will be a place of love and devotion to the Christ of the scriptures; we will be totally in love and devoted to Him. We will also love our fellow believers with the same love that Jesus has for us. That will be very good indeed.

Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Where are the people listed here in this chapter? Do you not think that they are in what the bible called outer darkness?

Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This is none other than the Jews who believed that they were to inherit the kingdom of God because of their faith in Abraham, but rejected the Messiah, the Lord Jesus when He came to them to show them the true kingdom of God. This will also be the abode of all unbelievers. What a tragedy to be in eternal torment, eternal darkness, burning in the lake of fire when they could have had the tree of life in heaven and eternal joy with Christ Jesus.

Revelaion 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Jesus identifies Himself once again by saying “I Jesus” and then He says that He has sent His angel to testify unto you. Who is the “you”? Is it not John? I believe that it is and then John would write everything down and send the letters to the “churches”. This is like Jesus saying: Ok John here is the message, you are to take it to all of the churches and it will comfort them and encourage them and they will encourage others and eventually it will go to all of the churches spread abroad. John would take the message to the pastors of these churches and the pastors would share with their flocks and the message would later be placed in the cannon of scripture for all the churches of the world to read.

Jesus further states that He is the “root and offspring of David. What do you make of that? What I see is that David was God’s creation so therefore He is the root or beginning of David and the offspring of David in that Jesus came in the physical form in the line of David.

If you remember the account of Jesus talking to the Pharisees in Matthew 22 v 42 He asked them a question.

Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. Mat 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, Mat 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? Mat 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? Mat 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

This is the root and offspring of David. Scripture interprets scripture.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. This is the invitation to come to Christ, all who are weary and heavy laden may come, all who thirst for righteousness may come because the water of life is free.

Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

Do you see who is testifying? It is none other than the Lord Jesus. The same Jesus that speaks in verse 16 “I Jesus” and because it is not John or some scribe that issues this warning it must be taken to heart and regarded as a matter of life and death. Every person hearing (or reading) this book of the revelation of Jesus Christ is the recipient of this warning. If anyone adds to the words of this book, (what book?) Revelation, God will add to them the plagues that are written in the book of Revelation. And may I say that there are some cults that will be severely judged because of what they have done to this book , not an interpretation but changing the words to fit their cultic meaning and false doctrines.

Attempting to give an explanation of the book or an exegeses of the book is not meant here, trying to explain the sometime difficult passages so that all can benefit is good and wholesome, it is when people change the very words so that they now mean something else entirely that God gets a little miffed.

Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

The same goes for taking out words so that a false doctrine may be borne. Now why would someone do this with the book of Revelation? As you may have figured by now I have a theory on this. First, it may well be that some people are trying to get to heaven in a manner that is not biblical. Non churched people seem to want heaven and the splendor that is there, the problem is they do not want Christ in their lives so that they must find another way to enter. Some feel that if they do more good than bad they should be allowed into heaven, sort of like the old merit system where you get good merits for doing good and de-merits for messing up and as long as you have more good merits than bad you win.

Sorry, it does not work that way, there is only one way to get your ticket to the entrance at the pearly gates of heaven and that is by and through the sufferings, death and resurrection of Christ. We must believe that He is and was God in human flesh, that He died for our sins, That He rose the third day from the grave and forever more sits at the right hand of the father. If you believe that Jesus is the savor of the world then you have your ticket to heaven.

Revelation 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen.

Revelation 22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

This should be the prayer of the Church and every Christian, Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen and /Amen
