Chapter 19

This chapter is full of praise to the ‘Lord our God’. Praise has broken out in Heaven and the Church is bowing down to the Lamb of God.

We will see that the Bride of Christ has made herself ready for the wedding. This chapter also shows us the final battle where evil is finally put down; we see that all things have been prepared for this battle. The birds are ready to clean up the dead, and we will see the end of the beast and the false prophet.

Revelation 19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

Revelation 19:2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

Revelation 19:3 And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

Babylon has been destroyed once and for all, that great city that was able to corrupt the nations of the world. That system that polluted every aspect of human life, the religious and the economic, she has finally been destroyed.

We now have at least 10 kings led by the antichrist who are jubilant over the destruction of the system. They believe that they have finally come to power and can now reign with the antichrist. I believe they think that all restraints have been removed and they can take total control over the nations.

We see that praise and rejoicing has broken out in Heaven, there is a multitude shouting Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honor, and power, unto the Lord our God, for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. Everyone in Heaven is shouting praise to the Lord, the Church (24 elders), the four beasts (living creatures), everyone is praising God.

God has brought the destruction of Babylon and has used the kings of the earth to do His will.

Verse 3 says that the smoke of her burning rose up for ever and ever. This tells me that Babylon will never again trouble the earth or the people of God.

Next, we can see the motivation behind the praises of the people. They are praising God because true and righteous are his judgments. This is a revelation of the character of God. True and righteous, we see this in Revelation 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

We see again in Revelation 15:3,4 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, sayingGreat and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

We also see the praise in Romans 2:2,5 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

In Romans 2:11 we see that each person gets what they deserve, God does not play favorites. Everyone is judged on the same scale and the judgment will be equal. Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

The only way to escape the judgment of God is to believe on His Son whom He sent into the world. Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Acts 16:31 tells us that if we believe on Jesus Christ we can be saved. And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

It may well be time for you to ask Jesus Christ into your heart because this Tribulation period will see very few people come to faith in Jesus. The result of rejecting Him will be eternal separation from Him in the Lake of Fire that burns for eternity. The Bible teaches that everyone will get a resurrection body that is eternal; some will spend eternity dressed in white with Jesus Christ while others will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. If eternal torment sounds good to you, then by rejecting Christ you will get what you want. This is not my decision however; the Heavenly reward sounds much better, Heaven sounds much better than hell don’t you think?

As for me and my house, we will follow (serve) the Lord Jesus Christ. This should be the motto of every Christian today as it was for Joshua.

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

We have seen that God has destroyed Babylon and the saints have praised Him for His righteous judgments. God has worked in bringing the saints to the time of the second coming of Christ, to the marriage supper of the Lamb, and to the casting away into the lake of fire of the antichrist and the false prophet.

The praise continues in the following verses because of the coming marriage supper and the coming judgment.

Revelation 19:4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

Revelation 19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

Revelation 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

The bride of Christ has made herself ready. How did she do this?

I believe that the true church having kept the faith, having fulfilled the great commission by preaching, teaching, baptizing and making disciples has in fact made herself ready for the coming King.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Christ taught His followers that their heart should be always tuned to the voice of Christ. The Apostle Paul taught the followers of Christ how to be used to lead others to a saving knowledge of Christ. Paul left instructions for the churches, the elders and the deacons. (Please see the pastoral epistles of Timothy and Titus,)

Jesus Christ empowered the Church by sending the Holy Spirit to indwell every believer so that they could carry out the instructions of the scripture. The church by faith believes the message of scripture, and therefore the righteous acts of the saints that are judged at the Bema seat of Christ will be the clothing that they have when they ride on the white horses returning with the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ.

The following verses show us that the Church is the bride of Christ and that there can be no mistake.

Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

2Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Ephesians 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Ephesians 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Revelation 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

The Bible shows us that Christ loves the Church and uses the imagery of husband and wife, bridegroom and bride to depict His relationship with the Church.

Jesus empowered the Church at Pentecost then removes the Church from the world at the start of the Tribulation period. The Church then returns, married to the Lord Jesus with honor as the bride of Christ. The Church returns for the marriage supper not the wedding because that has already taken place in Heaven.

Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Again, those that are called to the marriage supper are called blessed. There will be a multitude of people called to the marriage supper but only the Church is called the bride of Christ.

Dr Barnes had the following things to say about this passage.

“Confirming all by a solemn declaration. The importance of what is here said; the desirableness of having it fixed in the mind, amidst the trials of life and the scenes of persecution through which the church was to pass, makes this solemn declaration proper. The idea is, that in all times of persecution – in every dark hour of despondency – the church, as such, and every individual member of the church, should receive it as a solemn truth never to be doubted, that the religion of Christ would finally prevail, and that all persecution and sorrow here would be followed by joy and triumph in heaven.”

What a blessing to be at the supper for there will not be anyone there without the proper garments, the Church, the bridegrooms, the bridesmaids, everyone will belong to Christ. What a glorious time, a festival supper like no other, sitting down with Jesus Christ and His bride, face to face with the Savior. This should send goose bumps up your spine just thinking about it, it does for me.

John gets so excited that he falls down to worship the angel and the angel rebukes him.

Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Only God is to be worshiped, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, all deserving of worship because all are the one and true God.

the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesy. Jesus Christ was prophesied in the Old Testament and the words and life of Christ are the fulfillment of prophesy. Jesus testified of the Father and said ‘if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father’.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?’

Jesus Christ is God in human flesh. All of scripture points to Christ and the fulfillment of scripture that we have here in the book of Revelation is of Christ Jesus.

Now we see Heaven opened again and the white horse that signifies purity and righteousness. The rider that sits on the horse is called Faithful and True.

Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Revelation 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

This is a most beautiful passage. Heaven is opened and the picture we get is that of a mighty war horse with a rider that is calledFaithful and True and He is pictured as a Righteous Judge.

The NASB renders verse 12 this way.

Revelation 19:12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.

The symbolic language is removed and the passage takes a clearer meaning, in that judgment is coming in the form of the rider who wears the Diadems or crowns and has the name that only He knows.

He is shown with clothing dipped in blood and His name is called the Word of God.

This is none other than Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is coming to bring righteous judgment on an unbelieving world. Remember that the only sin that can never be forgiven is unbelief. Every other sin that God condemns stems from unbelief.

Revelation 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

This verse pictures the Church (the bride) returning with Christ, pure, spotless, dressed in the righteousness of Christ and as witnesses to the judgment that He brings.

First, that it is deserved judgment.

Second, that it is righteous judgment.

Third, that it will be final judgment. The horses picture victory and triumph over the enemies of God.

And now, the judgment begins with the following verses of Revelation Chapter 19.

Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Revelation 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

Revelation 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

Revelation 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Revelation 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

My prayer is that neither you or your children or grandchildren or great grandchildren would suffer the judgment of this time.

Now, verse by verse lets look at the meaning in this passage.

From verse 15 we see And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword. This is always the Word of God. Every time we see thesharp sword coming from the mouth of Christ it is His word, both the spoken word and the written word. Christ spoke the world into existence and He can speak and the judgment will come. Look at the following passages of scripture and compare them with this verse.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Revelation 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

Revelation 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

And we see it again in Revelation 19:21.

Revelation 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

And finally we see in the book of Hebrews the following.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Revelation 19:15 also speaks of Christ ruling with a rod of iron and treading the wine press. and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Jesus will have the absolute rule, Christ will take the throne, and Christ will rule righteously. The enemies of God will be crushed as grapes would be crushed in a wine press.

Verse 16 reads And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

We see Jesus Christ now honored with the glory only He deserves. Jesus is the creator, sustainer of life, the Messiah, the Savior, and now He is the Judge. We see here that this title is written on His clothing and on His thigh, King of Kings and Lord of Lords as He is the Almighty God. Any religion or faith that does not hold Jesus in this position is a cult.

Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God.

The angel now calls for all the vultures and carnivorous foul to come to the great battle, called the supper of the great God. The slaughter will be so great that the birds will be used to clean up the mess.

You can get an idea of this when a hunter field dresses an animal. It will not be long before the birds will find the remains and devour it so that there is absolutely nothing left.

In the case of Revelation 19:17 the fouls will be ready for the meal.

Now Revelation 19:18.

Revelation 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great..

Who will the birds devour? It is the unbelieving nations, the kings, and captains, horses and the army that ride them. The birds will eat the flesh of men and animals until there is nothing or no one left that is in unbelief.

This is why I say that no rational person should ever suffer this time. This is why the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ wants all to be saved and turn to Him in faith.

Observe the following verse.

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved, and thy house.

And,

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Then we have Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The scriptures tell us that salvation is a free gift to everyone who will believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, who will believe that He is God, not one of many gods but the Almighty God. You have nothing to lose and Heaven to gain.

Moving along let’s look at Revelation 19:19.

Revelation 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

This is where it gets very interesting. This will be the battle of Armageddon. The Euphrates has been dried up so that the kings of the east and of the entire earth can march right in and attempt to destroy Israel.

There has been great discussion about the identity of these kings. Bible scholars often disagree about who they are. One opinion is that this is none other than the U.S.S.R, Russia. They come to this conclusion by returning back to the Old Testament book of Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39 which deal with Gog, the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal.

Starting in chapter 38 we see that the word of the Lord comes to Ezekiel and the following prophesy is delivered.

Ezekiel 38:1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Ezekiel 38:2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

Ezekiel 38:3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

Ezekiel 38:4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

Ezekiel 38:5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:

Ezekiel 38:6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

Ezekiel 38:7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

Ezekiel 38:8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

Ezekiel 38:9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

Ezekiel 38:10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:

Ezekiel 38:11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

Ezekiel 38:12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

Ezekiel 38:13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

Ezekiel 38:14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?

Ezekiel 38:15 And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:

Ezekiel 38:16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

There does seem to be a just a wee little problem with this view. The battle of Armageddon concerns all nations and not just Gog and its allies as they are listed here in Ezekiel 38 and spoken of in Revelation 16:16.

Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

We need to pay attention to the wording here because this is not the battle of Armageddon but a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. Israel has been fighting the heathen nations throughout this period called the Tribulation. This is an ongoing campaign. Gog comes from the north, but in Revelation 19 the armies come from the whole earth.

There is also the fact that after Russia and her allies invade Israel it takes 7 months to clean up the mess. Ezekiel 39:12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. Also this campaign takes place on the mountains of Israel and not the valleys.

Ezekiel 39:4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

Please allow me to put this into perspective for you.

First in Revelation we see the revealing of the Lord Jesus Christ in His glorified majesty. Then we read the seven letters to the churches. This is followed by the rapture of the Church.

Second, starting in Revelation Chapter 4 the church is no longer mentioned because it has been ‘caught up’ to be with Christ. The Church is going through the period called the Bema Seat of Christ where Christians loose or receive rewards for the works done after salvation. Also, the wedding of the Church to Christ takes place in Heaven.

Third, on earth war has broken out and the armies from the north are invading. The nations are in turmoil and there comes on the scene one who is able to pull all nations together so that there is a pseudo peace. This is the antichrist. Israel is allowed to rebuild the temple and restart the sacrificial system.

Fourth, the antichrist breaks the peace treaty with Israel and places himself on the throne and stops the sacrifices.

Fifth, the judgment of God gets more severe with the bowls of wrath being poured out and millions of people are killed. At least one half of the worlds population dies.

Sixth, Christ returns with His bride the Church and ushers in the last great battle where the kings of the world come to fight.

Now that is a very brief synopsis of a very complicated series of events.

The kings of the earth come to make war against Jesus Christ and His army. They come by the millions as if by shear number they might overcome the King of Kings.

The result will be as the Bible has recorded, Jesus Christ will be victorious.

Have you ever thought of this prophesy as also being history? It is! The Bible will not be re-written when this battle is over because it is already accomplished in the mind of Christ. It may be future for us but it is history for Him, because He sees past, present and future as having been completed. Why, because nothing can alter the plan of God. There is no power on earth or in Heaven that can change God’s plan for He is the Almighty God.

Unbelievers will be killed, the antichrist and the false prophet will be cast into the lake of fire where they will remain for eternity, where the worm never dies and the flame is never quenched.

I am reminded of the story of a man that was asked if he could understand the book of Revelation and his reply was “Sure, Jesus wins”. We need to hold that thought close because Jesus always wins.

Amen.
